Week 3 Day 2

Ok so today was a little cold outside, but felt great at the same time. I was already in some discomfort from Monday. My hip was hurting a little and my achilles was still hurting from Monday but I knew I could suck it up so I did  The running intervals were not so bad, but I am still having intense muscle pain in the shin area but seems to be moving to my calves mostly. I am hoping as I continue to build these muscles and get them used to this activity that it will diminish little by little. Overall felt great. I am ignoring the joint pains I am having and being hopeful it will all pan out. Looking forward to Friday I am very anxious to see and feel the progress.

Week 3 Day 1 complete.

Week 3 Day 1 of running complete. The program pushed me a little today, but I did it. I could have made several excuses to not go today. I was running late, I had an old injury that was hurting, and it was raining. However I have committed this to myself and God and I was determined I am not going to make excuses. I pushed through and ask for God's favor to stop the rain. Well I got to the track and the rain picked up. I thought God that's not what I asked for. I felt that I was supposed to continue my effort and do the part I could and that was walking out there on the track anyway. I did. I started in the rain and a few minutes later it stopped. I am so glad I went but there were definitely moments I was thinking " wow this really stinks, its raining, my foot is already hurting and I don't know if I can do this new longer running interval." I began the first longer run interval and it was ok at first. My new shoes felt great as far as comfort and they have reduced the impact on my joints, but I am still having the intense shin muscle pain. I did get insight on that at the running store though and think I am going to be able to overcome it. I have a great little product called "The Stick" coming in the mail that works out the knots in your muscles and increases the elasticity of the connecting tissues and i cant wait to see how that helps. Also as I lose weight I am sure that would have to lessen on top of the fact the muscle will have to be getting used to the routine. Overall Week 3 Day 1 felt great inside and out.

"Thanks God I know I would not be doing this without you help and favor."

Sunday Thinking

Sitting here watching football and thinking about my week 3 beginning tomorrow. I got my knew shoes from the running store yesterday and excited to try them out. Can't wait for everyone out there to try the Couch-to-5k running program and tell me their stories. I will be back tomorrow to let you know how W3D1 (week 3, day 1) goes.

Week 2 Day 2 and 3

Wednesday I decided to go to a local track to run instead of out on our country road where we live. I thought maybe it would be easier cause there would be no hills. Well started the first interval of running and I felt good and thought I was liking the track betters, but then I started having intense muscle pain in the group of muscles on the front of my lower legs around my shins. It was a like a tightening almost like a cramp but it burned badly. Making me want to stop the run but knew the interval was only going to be 30 more seconds so I stuck it out. Well this continued every time I ran the 90 second intervals. Not sure what was going on but was discouraged.

Friday (Today) I did my week 2 day 3 run and it was identical to Wednesday but was concerned I was going to be in the same pain I was in Wednesday. I had researched the pain I was having and found out some possibilities but what I read was not good it could mean me not being able to stick with the program I am following.  Well today I wore looser shoes just to see if it was a circulation issue because I read that somewhere in the past couple days. Well it seemed to help, but not sure if it is the shoes or terrain because I ran at home instead of the track today. Going to a running store tomorrow to check out some actual running shoes. Hopefully I will gain insight.

Started Week 2

Monday: (9-20-2010): Well started week 2 today. You would not think that running an extra 30 seconds on every running interval would be that big of a difference but boy was it ever. I made it though and thats whats important. Eager to continue the journey but really having a hard time picturing myself running the whole 30 minutes one day. I am determined though to finish the whole program.

Started Running Monday

So I started running Monday September 13, 2010. I finally came to a place in my life where I just could not take being overweight anymore. I have tried gym memberships and DVDs and nothing seems to be sticking with me. I can't seem to get in the habit of anything. I always make excuses. Well I knew I needed something that could entertain me in a way the other things could not. I needed a challenge. I tangible goal.  By tangible I mean something on paper. This running program I joined is a 9 week plan laid out 3 days a week for 9 weeks. How is this different from the gym memberships and DVDs? With the 9 week program you should be running a 5k which is 3 miles at the end of the 9 weeks. It works you up to this day by day, week after week. So I charted it out in a binder so it is on paper and I look at it everyday before I run. I also created a blank grid of the days so that I can journal after he run. The journal has 3 entries now.

Monday: Well this is harder then I thought but a little more intriguing then I thought as well. I was thinking after my second interval of jogging that there was no way I was going to be able to do this. After about halfway it was not as bad as I thought.

Wednesday: Decided to listen to some music this day because I found an application for Android phone that times the intervals and pauses your music and dings for the start and finish of your alternating jog and walk sessions. This made the time go by so much faster vs. looking at my watch over and over again.

Friday: Felt worn down at the end of the week and thought (man next week will get harder and this is tough enough) but soon told myself I can do this I am not going to let thoughts like that take over. I began talking out loud and telling myself all the reasons I was doing this. Wow who knew that I could counsel myself. Gave myself advise then whined in return then encouraged myself and then gave excuses and then called myself out. (Who needs a therapist? LOL)

I look forward to next week but dread it at the same time. I look forward more then dread.

If your interested in the program it is called Couch-to-5k and you can look it up on line or check it out on Facebook. Click Here Couch-to-5k.

I may start running next week at Forest City Park at the track if anyone wants to join me. Bring some water and a way to time your intervals. If you have an iPhone or Android type phone there are apps you can download and I can show you how to do that as well.

Be blessed and happy running!
